Oxidation is the result of a series of chemical reactions involving oxygen and elevated temperatures resulting in compounds that contribute to the acidity of the oil and depletion of the basic additives. The degree of oxidation is a good indicator of oil degradation and a rapid increase in oxidation may indicate abnormal operating conditions, internal overheating or over-extended oil drain interval. Oil analysis results are reported in the absorbance scale.
